This record was assembled by Robert L. Van Nice in the course of an investigation initiated in 1937 and carried on after 1957 under the auspices of Dumbarton Oaks. The information included pertains not only to the form and condition of the structure but also to the history of the building, the use of its various spaces, the position of ceremonial furniture and icons, and the working methods of Byzantine architects and masons. This monumental work, consisting of both collotype and offset plates (23 x 35 inches), provides detailed sections of major elements at a scale of 1:100 m, as well as elevations and isometric drawings. The first installment has twenty-one plates. The two installments complete the survey and fit into the portfolio that is provided with the first installment.
