Excerpt from "Tropical Humid Forests" "Stepping off the plane in Bangkok, I took a deep breath. The air was heavy, humid, and warm. Although I could smell airplane fuel, there was something else in the air that overpowered any manmade scent. It was a mixture of crushed leaves, some mysterious flowers, a sharp yet pleasant whiff of mold, and a hint of wet earth after the rain. It was the beginning of an addiction. Between the confines of the imaginary lines of the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn lies an area where life seems to run in a higher gear. Most of this area is or at least until recently was covered with forests. With a few exceptions, forests of the tropics are rainforests. Although precise definitions of tropical rainforests vary, most characterize these unique plant commu nities by a combination of intense precipitation regimes and high, relatively stable temperatures."
