CASSIODORUS, Magnus Aurelianus (b. Scylacium [Scylletium; now Squillace, Calabria]. ca. 485; d. Vivarium [now Stalleti], near Scylacium, ca. 580). Writer.

CORRETTE, Michel (b. Rouen, 1709; d. Paris, 1795). Composer and author of method books.

DA PONTE, Lorenzo (b. Ceneda [Vittorio Veneto], 1749; d. New York, 1838). Poet and librettist.

FORKEL, Johann Nicolaus (b. Meeder, Lower Franconia, 1749; d. Göttingen, 1818). Music historian and bibliographer.

FUX, Johann Joseph (b. Hirtenfield, near St. Marien, Styria, 1660; d. Vienna, 1741). Theorist and composer.

GALILEI, Vincenzo (b. S. Maria a Monte, near Florence, probably late 1520s; d. Florence, buried 1591). Theorist, lutenist, and composer. Father of the astronomer Galileo Galilei.

GUIDO OF AREZZO [Guido d'Arezzo, Guido Aretinus] (b. ca. 991-992; d. after 1033). Theorist.

HOLST, Imogen (Clare) (b. Richmond, Surrey, 1907; d. Aldeburgh, 1984). Writer on music and conductor.

HUCBALD (b. at or near Tournai, ca. 840; d. St. Amand, 930). Monk and theorist.

JOHANNES DE GARLANDIA [Johannes Gallicus] (fl. ca. 1240). Theorist.

KIRCHNER, Athanasius (b. Geisa, near Fulda, 1601; d. Rome, 1680). Scholar and theorist.

PEDRELL, Felipe (b. Tortosa, Spain, 1841; d. Barcelona, 1922). Scholar and composer.

PERLE, George (b. Bayonne, N.J., 1915). Composer and theorist.

PTOLEMY, Claudius (b. Ptolemais?, after 83 C.E.; d. 161). Theorist. Although chiefly known for his work on mathematics and astronomy, he also wrote a 3-volume treatise on music theory.

RAMOS DE PAREJA [Ramis de Pareia], Bartolomeo [Bartolome] (b. Baeza, ca. 1440; d. 1491 or later). Theorist.

ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques (b. Geneva, 1712; d. Ermenonville, 1778). Philosopher, author, and composer.

SCHENKER, Heinrich (b. Wisniowczyki, Galicia, 1868; d. Vienna, 1935). Theorist.

SEEGER, Charles (Louis, Jr.) (b. Mexico City, 1886; d. Bridgewater, Conn., 1979). Musicologist, composer, folklorist.
