He was formerly Associate Professor of History at Western Carolina University, where he taught courses on United States political, immigration, and Latino history. He is the winner of The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens’ inaugural Shapiro Book Prize for The Rise of the Latino Vote: A History.
